Sierra of the Umbría

SL-V 9: Footpath of El Castellar

This footpath covers one of the most emblematic areas where we can practice trekking in La Vall d'Albaida. This route has many natural and environmental resources and is, without doubt, the ideal setting for going off into the country with no difficulties.

It starts in the road from Ontinyent to Bocairent (CV-81), at the ravine “Tarongers”, opposite the “Cagalló del Gegant”. Then, the footpath goes up through a pine forest and leads us to the summit. We pass an area full of bushes, from where we can see the impressive rocky formations of the ravine of Bocairent, also called ravine of “l'Avern”.

We arrive at the Alto del Castellar (655 metres) in half an hour, where there are magnificent views of the north slope of the Sierra Mariola, the valleta of Agres, the Benicadell, the Santo Cristo Chapel of Bocairent, the Solana and the municipal area of Ontinyent.

We can go down from the Alto del Castellar using the same path as before, although we can find the path which goes down the southern face of the mountain, towards the Tarongers' ravine. There we link with the path which runs through the bottom of the ravine and arrives at the starting point in around one hour.

This footpath is marked with green colour.
