Benicadell

PR-V 222: Path Alto del Benicadell and Nevera

The town of Atzeneta is located in the region of La Vall d'Albaida, at the foot of the Benicadell Sierra, a privileged place for trekking.

The path starts between two sierras, then goes deep into the ravine which is in the middle and arrives at the Fuente del Arriero (fountain). After a climb, we will be in the Fountain of “l'Anohueret”, from where one can admire the town of Atzeneta.

We always have to take the path which goes upwards. Then we will arrive at the “Pla d'en Roda”, a circular space in the middle of the sierra full of olive trees. Especially noteworthy are the remains of two old mountain houses. One of them still has the structure of the pool with a spring from where water flows in rainy years. There are also two huge kermes oaks which contribute to the beauty of the landscape.

If we follow this track we will arrive at the Corral de Penalba. Once there, different wells of snow can be observed dispersed along the route. There are exactly six of them from here to the top of the Benicadell.

Further on, in the so-called Corral de Diego, we leave this track and take the left path in the crossroads. One kilometre away we will find the Font Freda, the last point where we can get water before reaching the top of the mountain. In the same crossroads, if we take the path to the right we come to the ravine of Fontanares, where we can admire both mountains, Covalta and Montcabrer.

A little higher up we will find three interesting infrastructures of snow, as well as the remains of a house called “caseta Don Miguel”. The path here is narrow and winds among ash trees, honeysuckle, holm oaks, strawberry trees, savines and milfoils. It leads us to the well of snow which is at the foot of the Benicadell.

We are almost in the summit, just one last effort. From there, if the day dawns bright and clear, we can sight the Mediterranean sea and even the island of Ibiza.
