Benicadell

The Benicadell is the most emblematic sierra for the "Valldalbaidins" (inhabitants from the region of "La Vall d’Albaida"), an obligatory visit when you are in this region. This mountain, the highest of the region, is 1104 meters above sea level and a meeting point with a natural space of outstanding beauty. Its toponymic origin derives from the Arab fortress called "Peña Cadiella", which was conquered at the end of the 11th century by Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, "El Cid Campeador", and was described in the "Cantar del Mío Cid" (epic poem).

Actually, the Benicadell is the extension of the Sierra of the Covalta. Both sierras are separated by the mountain pass of Albaida, and the Benicadell continues to the Sierra of Agullent and the town of Ontinyent. To the opposite direction, that is, to the region of "La Safor", the Benicadell arrives at the Sierra of Ador. The position of the Benicadell has determined the climatology and mainly its vegetation. Thus, there are two zones clearly differentiated which belong to different regions. On the one hand, the zone of "La solana" —sunny spot— is in the region of "el Comtat" (very impoverished and with poor vegetation). On the other hand, the zone of "La umbría" —shady spot— is located in the "La Vall d’Albaida" region (with lush and thick vegetation). Unfortunately, the Benicadell has lost out due to the spate of fires which every summer devastate the area and affect its forest wealth.

There are many signs which testify the close links between this sierra and man. Thus, there can be easily found different snow stores, constructions for the collecting and canalization of waters from Roman and Arab times, archaeological sites, dry stone walls, watchtowers, castles and other resources made in different historical periods.
