Atzeneta d'Albaida

Firstly, the route through the Benicadell towns leads us to Atzeneta d’Albaida. This town is one of the biggest of this route, with around 1 300 inhabitants.

The most outstanding building is San Juan Bautista's Church, from the 18th century. It is located in the old part of the town and is decorated with motifs in Baroque style. Another important building is the Chapel of the Cristo del Calvario, built in 1833 on an old sanctuary from 1709. If you walk throughout the urban area, you will find different retables from the 18th century and six public washing places connected to the “séquia del port” (irrigation ditch). This irrigation ditch is the traditional water supply of the town. Especially noteworthy are the houses which are in front of it, which have a series of windows in order to use water from their inside, as it was a washtub.

The “Nevera de Dalt” and the “Nevera de Baix” are good examples of the so-called “snow trade”, which was quite important in the region of “La Vall d'Albaida”. The town's main attractions are the traditional craft trades which are disappearing, such as the stone carving and the making of utensils with esparto grass.

Finally, it is worth mentioning that we can always enjoy the specialities prepared in Atzeneta d'Albaida, such as the “fabioles”, “fogasses”, “platanets” and the different types of rice, which are the basis of our region's gastronomy.
