Fontanars dels Alforins
Wine in “La Vall d'Albaida” has always been plentiful and of high quality. Most of the towns of this region are wine producers. There are indeed different cooperatives throughout the region. However, without doubt, if we talk about wine in our region, we associate this product with the town of Fontanars dels Alforins.
Wine has been elaborated in Fontanars for years. In fact, the “Alforins” had around fifty wineries in 1950. Nowadays, there are only six which have taken the vinicultural tradition and have adapted it to a making process which combines modern technology with the varieties of the area. The “Alforins” wines, as well as the rest of wines produced in the region, belong to the guarantee of origin and quality Valencia, subarea Clariano.
A
modernization and rationalization process of the crops; the introduction
of new varieties; the clonal selection of plants; early grape harvests;
the control of fermentation temperatures; or the different types of
pruning are some of the elements which have secured the excellent results
of the “Alforins” wines.
Fontanars' vineyards are located around estates (typical country houses) that in the past had enough infrastructures to work the fruits of their lands. These estates are an outstanding attraction when you visit the “Alforins” high plateau.
The most important red wine varieties are: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Tempranillo, Pinot Noir, Shyraz and Monastrell. Whereas the most relevant white wine varieties are: Verdil, Chardonnay, Macabeo and Parellada.
Most of Fontanars wineries organize visits (arranged in advance) and visitors will have the opportunity to buy their products.
