Sierras of
Montduver and “La Marxuquera”
This sierras include the municipal areas of Quatretonda, Pinet and Llutxent,
which are in the Vall d’Albaida region.
This is a pre-coastal mountainous area located in the confluence of the
Iberian and the Bética mountain ranges. It has an enormous geological
and geomorphological interest and an outstanding landscape, with a significant
variety of plant formations. Some of these formations are especially noteworthy
because of the richness in endemic species, such as the formations on
the rocks or the laurel forests. It is also worth mentioning the original
cork oaks forest of the natural spot “Surar de Pinet”, which
thrives on calcareous soils of Pinet and Llutxent, and has turned into
local natural landscape. Moreover, the range of environments determines
an important presence of animal species with great value; likewise, the
abundance of karstic formations —other important element in the
area— favours the presence of many chiropteran species.
Thickets and pasture are well-represented in the area, particularly the
formations of grasses and meadows, the Mediterranean bushes and the calcareous
and karstic meadows. Other outstanding habitats are those of the kermes
oak and cork oak forests.
Regarding the species, apart from birds (such as Hieraetus fasciatus,
Aquila chrysaetos, Circaetus gallicus, etc.), it is
worth mentioning the presence of chiropterans, such as Minioterus
schreibersii or Rhinolophus ferrumequinum. On the other
hand, and as it has been said, especially noteworthy are the variety of
endemic plant species, such as Silene diclinis, Antirrhinum
valentinum, Scabiosa saxatilis subsp. Saxatilis.
