Middle Course
of the river Albaida
This
space, which is mostly located in the region of “La Vall d’Albaida”,
is exclusively a river area. Two areas can be easily differentiated from
the recently built reservoir of Bellús. Thus, if you go upstream,
the bed of the river is limited by an extensive agricultural area, where
the quality of water is not good due to the waste products dumped into
the river throughout the Vall d’Albaida region. Nevertheless, if
you go downstream, in the area known as the “Estret de les Aigües”
(“Strait of the Waters”), the river has an excellent environmental
quality, and in spite of the urban development pressure, forms interesting
riverside ecosystems.
This place is a response to the need to establish spaces for the conservation
of different species of freshwater fishes —such as Rutilus arcasii
or Chondrostoma arrigonis—. This is the reason why the
present habitats are limited to the above mentioned river areas: Mediterranean
rivers, Nerio-Tamaricetea, Mediterranean wet meadows and fluvial
corridors of Salix and Populus alba.
